The Fig and the Cedar Memorial

Slightly north of the Israeli community Alonei Habashan is a striking memorial to eight IDF soldiers killed in the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

Soldiers of the 173^rd Reconnaissance Battalion had stopped to rest when, suddenly, the Syrians started shelling them with mortar bombs. One of the armored personnel carriers (APC) took a direct hit, killing all eight soldiers inside.

After the war, the APC was left standing in the place of the attack, under a giant fig tree. A Lebanese cedar was planted by members of a nearby kibbutz to commemorate the eight soldiers who lost their lives.
